     Passover Torah Readings

Each day during Passover we read a different section from the Torah.

First Day

Reading: Shemot 12:21-51
Maftir: Bemidbar 28:16-25
Haftara: Yehoshua 5:2-6:1, 7:1

This portion relates to the events that come before the Exodus and continues with the plague of the firstborn and the Exodus. It concludes with the different laws involved with eating the Passover lamb.
The Maftir portion describes the sacrifices of the day that were brought to the Temple.

In the Haftara, we read that the People of Israel celebrated before beginning to fight for the Land of Israel.

Second Day

Reading: Vayikra 22:26-23:44
Maftir: Bemidbar 28:16-25
Haftara: Melahim II 23:1-9, 21-25

The Torah reading tells of a number of laws for sacrifices. It also warns the people no to profane HaShem's name, "Because He took us our of Egypt." This is followed by a brief explanation of Shabbat, Pesach, Shavout, Yom Kippur and Sukkot. In the Haftara, we read how the king commands the people of Israel to keep Passover. This is their first Passover since the reign of the Judges.

Third Day

Reading: Shemot 13:1-16
Maftir: Bemidbar 28:16-25

we read about the laws of the firstborn humans and animals in the beginning of the Torah reading. There is also a commandment to remember the Exodus especially when entering the Land of Israel. One way of doing this is to educate our children and another way is to wear tefillin as a bond between us and HaShem.

Fourth Day

Reading: Shemot 22:24 - 23:19
Maftir: Bemidbar 28:16-25

The Torah reading begins with different laws from giving charity to the laws having to do with the actions of the Judges. It concludes with the holidays of Passover, Shavout, and Sukkot, and the commandment to go to Jerusalem and bring sacrifices during the holidays.

Fifth Day

Reading: Shemot 34:1 - 26
Maftir: Bemidbar 28:16-25

We read about the new covenant that HaShem has made with the People of Israel after they sinned with the Golden Calf.

Sixth Day

Reading: Bemidbar 9:1 - 14
Maftir: Bemidbar 28:16-25

We read about the special laws of Pesach Sheni, "The second Pesach". All of those who couldn't bring the Passover lamb during the proper time, either because they were impure or they were too far away, could bring it one month later on the 15th of Iyar.

Shabbat Pesach

Reading: Shemot 33:12 - 34:26
Haftara: Yehezkel 36:37 - 37:14

Shir ha'shirim - The song of songs, is a love song composed by King Solomon. It describes the love of Israel to HaShem.  The Torah portion begins with Moses' request to see HaShem's greatness. HaShem explains that no one can see him and live. He ends up putting Moses into the cleft of a rock and showing him a vision. The reading goes on to deal with the covenant with The People of Israel after the Golden Calf. HaShem gives a list of commandments to do when they enter the Land of Israel. In return HaShem promises that they will defeat their enemies and widen their borders. This will enable them to travel safely to Jerusalem during the festivals.

Seventh Day

Reading: Shemot 13:17 - 15:26
Haftara: Shmuel II 22:1-51

We read about the Exodus and the miracle at the Red Sea. The Torah reading continues with the song of praise that the people of Israel sang to HaShem after they crossed the sea safely. It concludes with the miracle that HaShem did when He showed Moses how to sweeten the waters when the People of Israel complained of thrust.

Eighth Day

Reading: Shemot 15:19 - 16:17
Haftara: Yeshayahu 10:32 -12:6

We read of the importance of charity and helping one another. The Torah reading concludes with an overview of the festivals.
